McCarthy’s Insurance Group County Senior Football League Division 2

John Mitchels 1-16

Firies 1-16

A late goal by Firies dragged them back into this County League Division 2 game in Ballyseedy on Sunday, in a game that ended up with both sides sharing the spoils.

It was disappointing, given that Mitchels had held a five point lead going into the final 10 minutes of the game following a Darragh Cunnane goal. However, it was another strong showing by Mitchels who are now on 2 league points as they take a break next weekend from League action.

Firies opened the scoring from play in the first minute, before an early two-point free from James Duggan, who was in top form from placed balls. Despite early Firies possession, strong Mitchels defending limited them to a pointed ’45 from James Horgan, who was the Firies dangerman during the game, scoring 1-7 in total.

Pat Kearney from play and James Horgan swapped scores, before a Mikey Kelliher point, and a two pointer from Paudie White put Mitchels three up on the quarter hour.

By the 25th minute, Firies had levelled it and went two points ahead in the closing stages, but two Darragh Cunnane points, one from a free, left the sides level 08- each at the break.

A slow start by Mitchels in the second half saw them concede a two-pointer and a point to go three points down. But Mitchels dug in and levelled it through a Paudie White point and long-range two-pointed free from James Duggan.

Horgan for Firies and Mikey Kelliher swapped points, Horgan adding a free, before a well-worked move through the hands saw Darragh Cunnane rifle the ball to the net. Extra points from Sean Moloney and another two-pointed free from Duggan saw Mitchels five points up with 10 to go.

Firies dug in though and brought the gap down to three points, despite Pat Kearney’s late point, but in the final few minutes, a goal from Firies dangerman James Horgan, put the sides level and despite Mitchels looking for a last attack in injury-time, the final whistle blew with the two sides deadlocked.

John Mitchels u16s

U16 Central League Division 2

John Mitchels 2-15

Ardfert 2-8

John Mitchels U16 team played Ardfert in the first round of the Central Region in Caherslee last Thursday and in what was a thrilling game throughout, a strong second half performance from Mitchels saw them capture the  points.

Michael Fitzpatrick opened the scoring for Mitchels with Eddie Carmody adding two points early on. Ardfert, playing with the aid of a strong breeze, fought back and by half time led by 2-6 to 1-7. The Mitchels goal came from the outstanding Eamon Kissane who ran the length of the pitch to drive the ball into the Ardfert net.

The key moment of the game at the start of the 2nd half when Michael Fitzpatrick, who was constantly alert, was first onto a spilled ball by the Ardfert goalkeeper, was bundled over in the penalty box and Eddie Carmody confidently finished from the spot.

This significantly boosted the Mitchels energy levels, and the Mitchels defence kept the lead intact thanks to excellent defending from Fionan O’Callaghan and Rory Bowler who really led the way driving the team out of defence. Donnacha Noonan chipped in with 2 points from midfield.

Tom Óg O’Regan also had a very assured performance in goals and made an important save towards the end to keep Mitchels in the lead. His kickouts in the second half, against a strong wind were very accurate and ensured that Mitchels kept possession at critical times in the game. The final score finished John Mitchels 2-15 to 2-8.

The team are out again in Round 2 of the Central Region V South Kerry on the 9th April at home at 7pm. All support would be greatly appreciated.

John Mitchels u14s

John Mitchels Our u14s first round of the County League saw them host Keel in Ballyseedy on Wednesday last.

It turned out to be a cracking game, with a very even first half, with both sides kicking some excellent scores. Two early goals for Keel in the second half threatened Mitchels with defeat, but they never said die.

Terrific performances by players such as Tom Kissane, Liam Costello, Tommy Moynihan, Ryan Hanafin, Tom O’Sullivan in goals, Ruairi O’Callaghan, Noah Foley, Donnacha Foley and many more saw Mitchels kick some excellent scores to comfortably take the victory at the end.

Féile Hurling

Congratulations to the John Mitchels players who took part in the County Féile competition last weekend with Tralee Parnells and captured the Division 2 Title. Eddie Carmody, Donnacha Foley, Ruairi O’Callaghan, Roibeard Foley, Ryan Hanafin, Jay McLarnon, Fionán O’Callaghan, Tom Kissane and Tom Óg O’Regan who were on the successful side who defeated Kenmare-Kilgarvan in Abbeydorney on Sunday evening.

U16s Ladies

u-16 girls North Kerry League

John Mitchels 2-3

Finuge-St Senans-Shannonside Tarbert 5-6

A very strong Finuge-St Senans-Shannonside Tarbert team hosted John Mitchels in the first round of the North Kerry League.

Despite Mitchels missing both Kerry players Grace O’Regan and Amy Noonan, they put in a serious effort against the home team and unfortunately came out on the wrong side of the scoreline.

Minor Ladies

John Mitchels minor ladies have played two games so far in the County League and remain undefeated. They put that on the line next Tuesday when they travel to Scartaglin to take on Scart-Cordal and we wish them the very best of luck.
