John Mitchels 2-10

Listowel Emmets 2-16

John Mitchels senior team travelled to Listowel for the second round of their County Leauge Division 2 campaign on Saturday afternoon. And despite a close finish, when 14 man Mitchels brought the Emmets lead down to 2 points, a late scoring burst from the hosts saw them pull away on the final whistle.

It was a bright start from Mitchels in the opening minutes, with points from James Duggan, Paudie White and Andrew Kerins, along with a goal from Mikey Kelliher that had them 1-3 to 0-1 ahead after 10 minutes.

But a black card for Conor Hurley turned the game away from Mitchels and despite 2 further frees from Mikey Kelliher, the extra man was the difference as Emmets grabbed 7 points without reply, including 2 two-pointers.

Mitchels rallied with a Paudie White point on the 26th minute, to make it a tied game. However, a second yellow card for Paudie White on the 28th minute had Mitchels facing the rest of the game with 14 men and down a point at the break, 1-6 to 0-10.

Under the new rules, having to face a team with an extra man is a huge disadvantage, and so it proved in the second half with Emmets scoring 1-5 without reply before Mitchels mounted a rally.

Two 2-pointed frees from James Duggan brought Mitchels into the game, and they began to push on in the last 10 minutes of the game. A goal from substitute Darragh Cunnane brought the gap right down to 2 points as the teams went into a long period of injury time, but a late scoring burst from Emmets saw them grab 1-1 late in the game.

Mitchels host Firies in the next round of the county league next weekend.
