McCarthy’s Insurance Group County Senior Football League Division 2

John Mitchels 0-14

Glenbeigh- Glencar 1-11

The first game of the Senior County League took place in Ballyseedy on Sunday, and in what was a tight game throughout, a late two-pointed free from goalkeeper Sean Broderick saw John Mitchels gain a share of the spoils with visitors Glenbeigh-Glencar.

In what was a game played in windy conditions, the sides were evenly balanced throughout and despite going four points up midway through the second half, a black card for Mitchels allowed the Glenbeigh side to come back into the game.

Two early pointed frees from Mikey Kelliher had Mitchels ahead by the fifth minute, but a two pointer from Caoilim Teahan levelled it by the 10th minute. Another brace of frees from Mikey Kelliher pushed the home team ahead once more, before another two-pointer from Teahan levelled it once more and then he added another free to put Glenbeigh ahead for the first time.

Sean Broderick came up the field to kick an excellent two point free against the strong wind in the 27th minute. This was the first of five two-pointers that the Mitchels goalkeeper scored and his accuracy was to be crucial in the game. However, a late two-pointer from Teahan had the visitors a point ahead at the break 0-7 to 0-6.

John Mitchels had the wind in the second half but it was Glenbeigh full-forward Gavan O’Grady who opened the scoring with the first point from play in the game. However, Sean Broderick kicked three two-point frees in a row to put Mitchels four ahead by the 10th minute of the second half.

Unfortunately, a black card for Andrew Kerins brought Mitchels down to 10 men and Glenbeigh took advantage of the extra man, scoring 1-3 to push them two points up with just three minutes left in the game. Broderick proved to be the trump card for Mitchels though, with a late two-pointer levelling matters late in the game and giving both sides a crucial league point.

Team: Sean Broderick, Nathan Rogers, Cian Sheridan, Darragh Hurley, Ciaran White, Jack Myers, Patrick Kearney, Brian O’Donnelly, Tyresse Flaherty, Conor Hurley, Andrew Kerins, Sean Moloney, Paudie White, James Duggan, Mikey Kelliher (c).
